Here's a book to break your bank-balance, your back and your brain

A New Kind of Science by Stephen Wolfram (The dude who gave the world Mathmatica) . It's a hefty mofo alright, but pretty interesting so far - I'm about 1/3 of the way in. The basic premise is that even the simplist systems can have inherent randomness. The coolest thing of course is that he uses vast swathes of cellular automata to demonstrates his point. I like cellular automata, I have ever since I was introduced Conway's Life on my Speccy Smilie
